Clan Sutherland Seal

Sutherland Clansman

The Earls of Sutherland date back to the early 1200s with the granting of the Earldom of Sutherland by Alexander II to William de Moravia, great grandson of Freskyn, in 1235. This makes it Scotland’s oldest existing Earldom. 2030 marks the 900th anniversary of Clan Sutherland itself, with a major international gathering planned at the Clan Seat of Dunrobin Castle in Golspie, Scotland, on the east coast of the Northern Highlands. Dunrobin is the largest and most northerly of the great houses with 189 rooms and is Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. The name derives from Robin’s hill or fort (Dun Robin) in Gaelic and is believed to be named after Robert, the 6th Earl of Sutherland.

Anyone of a Sutherland lineage, or a lineage of one of the septs or historically associated families—Cheyne, Clyne, Dŭffus, Federith, Gray, Murray, and Mowat—is invited to join the Clan Sutherland Society of North America at https://clansutherland.org.

Dunrobin Castle has been the home of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland since the 1300s. Just one mile north of Golspie, Scotland, on the east coast of the Northern Highlands, it is the largest and most northerly of the great houses with 189 rooms. Dunrobin is also Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. The name derives from Robin’s hill or fort (Dun Robin) in Gaelic and is believed to be named after Robert, the 6th Earl of Sutherland, who died in 1427.
